The buildings in which we live, work, and play protect us from Nature's extremes: cold, heat, wind, rain, and snow. But these structures affect and shape our environment too. Constructing and operating buildings requires enormous amounts of energy, water, and materials and creates large amounts of waste. Where and how they are built affects the ecosystems around us in countless ways. And the buildings themselves create new indoor environments that present new environmental problems and challenges.

As the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new field called green building is arising to reduce that impact at the source. Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition.

3 Green Solution Products Now Green Seal Certified!

Spartan Chemical Company, Inc., is committed to a cleaner, greener environment.
To that end, for over 35 years we've marketed specialty maintenance products that conform to or surpass the strict guidelines set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency, the United States Department of Agriculture, the Clean Water Act, individual state Volatile Organic Compounds regulations, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Phosphate Free
In the 60's, states and individual government bodies began passing regulations to reduce the amount of phosphates entering the nation's waters. While phosphates are excellent cleaning agents, they may cause dramatic increases in algae bloom on lakes and streams which, in turn, kill fish and other animal life. Spartan markets a complete line of phosphate free products.

Biodegradable
Biodegradable is a term used to describe products that degrade or break down through normal waste water treatment systems. In other words, they do not negatively affect lakes, streams, or our nation's water source. Well over 90 percent of Spartan cleaners and degreasers contain biodegradable surfactants.

Ozone Friendly
In 1978, chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFC's), a propellant commonly used in aerosols and found to detrimentally affect the ozone layer, were banned. Spartan aerosol formulations contain ecologically safer propellants, such as propane, butane or isobutane. In addition, Spartan offers a complete line of RTU Handi Sprays, ready-to-use products packaged in quart containers with trigger sprayers, to maintain the convenience of aerosol packaging.

Recyclable Packaging
Spartan products are packaged in attractive HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) plastic containers coded 2...one of the most desirable plastics for recycling.

Reusable Packaging
Spartan customers reuse empty 5-gallon pails and containers in their place of business or at home. The same is true of plastic drums, used as trash receptacles, storage bins, etc. Reusing containers in this manner contributes greatly to waste reduction, a desirable environmental benefit.

Disposable Packaging
Spartan's Big Kid 330-gallon disposable tote, a double walled corrugated fiber board container with a 3-ply polyethylene liner, eliminates drum storage problems and minimizes the amount of waste disposed of in landfills or incinerators. The Big Kid substantially contributes to waste reduction.

VOC Compliant
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) are the solvents which might be released into the air when a product is applied. VOC limits are being established in several states and by many industries prohibiting the use of products with more than 350 grams of vapor per liter of product. Spartan offers cleaners and seals with ratings well below the 350 gram per liter VOC limit.

Zinc Free
There is concern that quantities of zinc may kill the bacteria in waste water treatment plants. Spartan has responded with Glacier, our zinc-free finish.

User Friendly . . . Our Commitment to Worker Health and Safety
Spartan is committed to protecting the health and safety of the maintenance professionals we serve.

Proper Labeling
Spartan product labeling complies with the regulations outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency, United States Department of Agriculture, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Department of Transportation and other Federal, State, and local agencies. Complete directions, precautionary and first aid statements are included on all product labels. MSD sheets with additional specific information are furnished for each product.

User Friendly Dispensing Systems
SAM Press & Fill. . . features color-coded labeling and visual graphics, to assist in proper application and use of maintenance products. Clean On The Go is affordable, portable and more importantly - user friendly. Safety seals insure users have no contact with the diluted product. Foam guns, metering and proportioning equipment, and other items used in conjunction with Spartan products include complete directions and precautions.

User Friendly Cleaners and Degreasers
Spartan pioneered butyl-free degreasers in 1978 with the introduction of IC-115, and continued that effort with the introduction in 1989 of SNB-130, a butyl-free, heavy duty degreaser. Early in 1980, Damp Mop, a neutral pH floor cleaner, was first marketed. In 1987 we pioneered a non-alkaline disinfectant cleaner, DMQ . . and since its initial introduction in 1982, NABC, our acid-free bathroom disinfectant, has become the standard for the industry. Products like these and a variety of others in the Spartan product line provide health or safety benefits to the maintenance professionals who use them.

Our Commitment Continues
At Spartan, we work with packaging and raw material suppliers, seeking alternatives that will directly benefit the environment and insure the health and safety of the maintenance professionals who use our products. We pledge a continuance of this environmentally responsible position.

Meaningless marketing hype is not the answer to this very important issue. We will continue a solid, realistic approach. We remain dedicated to providing maintenance products and systems that accomplish the cleaning task, without risk or harm to the environment or persons using our products.
